The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reassured the international community that the recent damages to the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, occurring on Tuesday, pose no immediate threat to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
In a succinct statement shared via Twitter, the IAEA affirmed it is “aware of the reported damages to the Kakhovskaya dam” and confirmed that its on-site experts at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant are “closely monitoring the situation.” The statement underlines that there is “no immediate danger to nuclear safety at the plant.”
Earlier today, local authorities in Novaya Kakhovka, a city situated close to the hydroelectric power plant, reported the destruction of the upper part of the station due to Ukrainian shelling, leading to an elevated water level in the Dnieper River.
Despite these alarming circumstances, the IAEA’s assertion maintains a level of calm, reinforcing the nuclear watchdog’s capacity to manage potential nuclear threats and sustain safety measures.
