The Lebanese Ministry of Health has reported the deaths of nine people and injuries to 11 others following an Israeli airstrike that targeted areas in the Bekaa and southern Lebanon overnight. A Lebanese security source told a correspondent from the Jordanian News Agency (Petra) in Beirut that the Israeli airstrikes targeted a residential building in the town of Karak in the Zahle district, leading to the preliminary death toll of 12, with the majority being women and children. The debris removal is still ongoing.
Furthermore, nine members of a single family were killed in an Israeli airstrike on their home in the town of Sha’ath in Bekaa. The source also mentioned that Israeli warplanes targeted the towns of Kharbata, Sulm, Tulin, and Tyr Dibba in southern Lebanon this morning. According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, the Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon yesterday resulted in 20 deaths and 88 injuries in Nabatieh Governorate, and 18 deaths and 183 injuries in South Governorate.
The recent tensions in Lebanon have been exacerbated by a series of Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions, which have significantly escalated the conflict. These airstrikes have been a response to Hezbollah’s increased aggression, including rocket attacks into northern Israel. The confrontation has led to significant casualties and has stoked fears of a broader regional conflict.
Lebanon has been facing a severe political and economic crisis for years, marked by endemic corruption, economic stagnation, and a lack of effective governance. The situation has deteriorated since the massive Beirut port explosion in 2020, which led to widespread protests and political upheaval. The Lebanese government has struggled with implementing necessary economic reforms, which has only deepened the crisis. The ongoing financial meltdown has led to hyperinflation and a dramatic devaluation of the Lebanese pound, pushing a large portion of the population into poverty.
