The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a grave warning that about 19 million people, representing about 40% of Sudan’s population, are at risk of slipping into famine.
This dire situation comes after months of clashes between the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with no sustainable resolution to the ongoing fighting in sight.
Since the outbreak of the war in mid-April, an unprecedented humanitarian crisis has unfolded, resulting in catastrophic consequences due to the continuous battles in the three capital cities, the Darfur region, and various areas in Kordofan State.
According to WFP spokesperson Mohammed Elamin, “The situation is alarming, and we are deeply concerned about the growing food insecurity and hunger in Sudan.”
In a related context, the governor of North Darfur State, Nimr Mohamed Abdulrahman, revealed that the remaining food reserves can barely sustain the population for three weeks, warning that “local authorities are incapable of containing the crisis beyond that.”
Abdulrahman further explained that the situation in the state has reached a critical point due to the depletion of strategic food reserves and the absence of adequate international response.
