US & UK Launch New Wave of Strikes on Yemen's Houthis

In a coordinated effort, the United States and the United Kingdom launched a series of aerial attacks targeting Yemen’s Hodeidah province on the Red Sea coast. The strikes specifically focused on the Ras Issa area in the al-Salif directorate, northwest of Hodeidah. Four airstrikes hit this location, while two others targeted the Hodeidah Airport and the al-Jabana area northwest of the province.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller asserted that Washington remains committed to holding the Houthi rebels accountable for their recent assault on international shipping. The strikes come in response to the deadly attack that occurred on Wednesday.

The joint US-UK response follows a series of Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea since November. The Houthi militia claims these actions are in solidarity with Palestinians, particularly during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The international coalition, led by the US and the UK, views these attacks as a threat and has initiated retaliatory measures against the Houthis.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, in a statement on social media, declared that the attacks will persist until the perceived aggression ends and the blockade on the Gaza Strip is lifted. The situation remains tense as the conflict between the coalition forces and the Houthi rebels continues to escalate.

Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), emphasized on Sunday that the Rafah border crossing with Gaza has never been closed by the Egyptian side since the start of the war. Instead, Lazzarini pointed out that it is the Israeli side that hinders the entry of aid, as reported by Al-Qahera News TV channel. While en route to the Gaza Strip to assess the humanitarian situation firsthand, Lazzarini condemned the Israeli war in the strip as a "crime against humanity." He warned of the potential further deterioration of conditions in Gaza if the international community does not take prompt action. Lazzarini expressed concern about the indiscriminate targeting by the Israeli war machine, stating that civilians, including women, children, the elderly, and UNRWA staff, are all victims. He urged the international community and those close to the conflict to intervene in order to bring an end to the war or, at the very least, establish safe humanitarian corridors for aid delivery to the Palestinian people in the besieged strip.
