Jeremy Berndt, the US Chargé d’Affaires in Libya, emphasized on Wednesday the crucial importance of maintaining the integrity and technocratic independence of Libya’s Central Bank.
He noted that these principles are essential for ensuring the country’s stability, economic growth, and position in the international financial system.
Following a meeting with Central Bank Governor Naji Issa, Berndt shared via X (formerly Twitter), “Thank you for hosting me at the Central Bank of Libya yesterday.” He added that the discussions focused on ways to enhance technical cooperation between the U.S. and the Central Bank.
This meeting comes a week after Naji Issa officially took over as the Central Bank Governor from the interim head, Abdel Fattah Abdel Ghafar, following a unanimous vote by the House of Representatives to appoint Issa as Governor and Marai Al-Barassi as his deputy. Additionally, on Monday, the Central Bank announced the suspension of the foreign exchange tax, in compliance with court rulings.
