In a significant bipartisan move, members of both the Democratic and Republican parties in the US Senate have jointly presented a draft resolution accusing the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of committing genocide in Darfur.

The resolution, which has gained approval from the Senate, calls for international legal action to hold the RSF and its allied militias accountable for their alleged crimes, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.

The resolution, spearheaded by Senator James Risch (Republican, Idaho), along with Senators Ben Cardin (Democrat, Maryland) and Cory Booker (Democrat, New Jersey), details numerous violations by the RSF.

These include extrajudicial arrests, torture, extortion, sexual and gender-based violence, gang rape, sexual slavery, and forced displacement, primarily targeting non-Arab ethnic communities in Darfur.

This unified stance by the US Senate underscores the international community’s growing concern over the situation in Darfur and the urgency to address the alleged atrocities committed by the RSF and its affiliates.
