US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed readiness to lift sanctions on Niger, contingent upon the country’s return to constitutional governance after last year’s coup against President Mohamed Bazoum.
In an interview with “Jeune Afrique” magazine on Wednesday, Blinken underlined the possibility of sanctions removal and resuming anti-terrorism programs if Niger embraces constitutionalism and democracy.
He acknowledged some optimism about progress in this direction.
The United States maintains a drone base in Agadez, northern Niger, and has 1,100 troops stationed in the country.
Blinken’s African visit, which began on Monday, includes stops in Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Angola.
He emphasized the interconnection of futures, prosperity, and the increasing influence of African voices on the global stage, committing the United States to enhance partnerships across the African continent.
