The US base at Khirab al-Jir in Rmeilan, eastern Syria, was targeted by consecutive waves of drone and missile attacks. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the US forces successfully intercepted several of these attacks without any reported human casualties. This incident was accompanied by increased activity from the warplanes of the international coalition forces in the area’s skies.
Since October 19, US bases in Syria have been subjected to 67 attacks, with daily assaults on the bases in northeastern Syria involving rocket shells and drones. There are nine U.S. bases spread across Syria, including one in Al-Tanf in eastern Homs, two in the Deir Ezzor countryside, and six in Al-Hasakah.
The recent attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria have shown a noticeable escalation since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. This uptick in attacks coincides with heightened threats from Iran and its allied militias in response to the conflict in Gaza.
The attacks have involved unidentified unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ground-to-ground weapons. It’s reported that Iran-backed groups have been carrying out these attacks with armed drones on U.S. bases in territories east of the Euphrates River, which are under the occupation of the YPG/PKK terror group.
In response to these incidents, the U.S. has conducted retaliatory strikes against sites used by Kataib Hezbollah and other Iran-aligned groups in Iraq. The Pentagon has also expressed its intent to hold Iran accountable for these attacks, executed by Iranian proxies.
Additionally, a steady barrage of these attacks targeting bases used by US troops in Iraq and Syria came to a halt as Israel paused its war against Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip. This pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas coincided with a tentative reprieve for US troops.
