US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, on Monday, declared that while the United States “prefers a diplomatic approach to restrain Iran’s nuclear capabilities”, all options would be on the table if diplomacy fails, to ensure Iran doesn’t obtain nuclear weapons.
Addressing the pro-Israel lobby group, AIPAC, Blinken stated, “We continue to believe that diplomacy is the most effective and sustainable way to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. In parallel, economic pressure and deterrence enhance our diplomacy.”
Officials from Joe Biden’s administration have repeatedly warned that if a diplomatic solution cannot be reached, more aggressive methods would be considered to prevent Tehran from acquiring such a weapon.
Indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran to attempt to revive the Iranian nuclear deal, which the Donald Trump administration withdrew from in 2018, have collapsed.
Biden administration officials have been stating for months that the time Iran would need to produce enough material for one nuclear bomb has dwindled to weeks. A Pentagon official claimed in February that the period could be shorter than 12 days.
