The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that an Israeli tank fired at one of its observation towers in southern Lebanon on Wednesday.
In a statement, UNIFIL noted: “This morning, peacekeepers at a site near Kfar Kila observed an Israeli Merkava tank firing at their observation tower. Two cameras were destroyed, and the tower sustained damage.”
The statement added, “Once again, we are witnessing what appears to be a direct and deliberate attack on a UNIFIL position,” according to Reuters. UNIFIL called on the Israeli military and all parties to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property, and to “respect the sanctity of UN positions at all times.”
UN peacekeepers in Lebanon have been targeted several times in recent days, leaving at least four soldiers injured. Israeli tanks also breached the main gate of a UN base in southern Lebanon on Sunday.
Several European countries, particularly those involved in UNIFIL, have criticized Israel for attacking its forces in southern Lebanon. Israel has accused UNIFIL of acting as a human shield for Hezbollah and has called on the UN Secretary-General to withdraw these forces from southern Lebanon and remove them from conflict zones.
Lebanon’s security situation has deteriorated significantly in 2024 due to escalating hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. The conflict has led to widespread damage, especially in southern Lebanon, where both sides have engaged in frequent cross-border strikes. Israeli attacks have targeted infrastructure, including border crossings and civilian areas, leading to hundreds of deaths and displacing thousands. The UN has called for the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 to stabilize the region and protect civilians. The situation remains volatile, with international calls for a ceasefire and diplomatic resolution intensifying.
