The United Nations Security Council unanimously approved on Wednesday to extend the mandate of the UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon for an additional year.

During the Security Council session dedicated to the situation in Lebanon, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Nassim Ghouaoui, stated that the primary cause of instability in the Middle East is the occupation of Arab lands, and that the end of this occupation is a prerequisite for achieving peace and security in the region.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has been supervising patrols along Lebanon’s border with the occupied Palestinian territories since 1978. The current mandate was set to expire this coming Saturday.

The extension of the UN forces’ mission comes just days after violent clashes erupted between the Lebanese Hezbollah forces and the Israeli occupation army, coinciding with the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinians since October 7, 2023.
