The United Nations has released a report confirming the deaths of over 9,000 civilians, including more than 500 children, since the comprehensive Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
The UN stated that the actual number of casualties may be significantly higher than the confirmed figures they were able to ascertain. The toll on civilian lives has been devastating, with the months of May and June witnessing an increase in fatalities compared to a relative decline in the first four months of this year.
This weekend marks the passage of 500 days since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his armed forces to initiate the war.
In a separate development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed on Thursday that the authorities in Kyiv are unaware of the whereabouts of 200,000 children in the country due to the comprehensive Russian invasion.
Moscow has been accused of forcibly and unlawfully transporting Ukrainian children from the occupied territories to Russia. In March, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against President Putin and his Commissioner for Children’s Rights, Maria Lavova Belova, for their involvement in the forced deportation of Ukrainian children.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in an immense humanitarian crisis, with countless innocent lives lost and widespread displacement. The international community continues to condemn the Russian invasion and calls for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
