The United Kingdom is set to sign an agreement with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, commonly known as Frontex, on Friday, marking a significant step in collaborative efforts to combat illegal immigration.

This move comes as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, leading the Conservative government, prioritizes stopping migration across the English Channel from France ahead of the general elections slated for this year.

The British Home Office announced that the agreement would facilitate the exchange of intelligence between Frontex and the UK Border Force, aiding in the crackdown on human smuggling operations.

Additionally, the collaboration will extend to the development of new technologies, including the use of drones for border security.

The formal signing in London will see Phil Douglas, the Director General of the UK Border Force, and Frontex’s Executive Director, Hans Leijtens, finalizing the accord.

British Home Secretary James Cleverly highlighted the global nature of organized immigration crimes and human trafficking, emphasizing the need for shared solutions and ambitions.

Cleverly remarked, “The working arrangements between the UK and Frontex represent another significant milestone in addressing illegal immigration, securing our borders, and stopping the boats.”

The UK reports a one-third reduction in the number of migrants arriving on its southern shores in small boats last year, a decline from the record 45,000 migrants recorded in 2022.

This agreement signifies a pivotal moment in the UK’s efforts to enhance border security and address the challenges of illegal migration through international cooperation.
