On Wednesday, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) acted as a mediator in a significant prisoner exchange operation between Russia and Ukraine.
In a statement released by the ministry, it was highlighted that the UAE provided humanitarian mediation to facilitate the return of Russian soldiers from captivity.
The ministry disclosed the repatriation of 195 Russian servicemen from Ukrainian captivity, with comprehensive arrangements for their immediate medical treatment and rehabilitation upon their return to Moscow.
The statement highlighted the successful negotiation outcomes, stating, “On January 31st, thanks to diplomatic negotiations, 195 Russian servicemen, previously in perilous conditions of captivity, were safely retrieved from areas under the Kyiv regime’s control.”
In a reciprocal move, Ukraine welcomed back 195 of its POWs, marking a significant step towards de-escalation in the region. The released personnel are being transported back to Moscow on military aircraft, where they will receive necessary healthcare and rehabilitation services under the Russian Defense Ministry’s provision.
This prisoner exchange occurs amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, initiated by Russia on February 24, 2022, now in its second year.
Russia asserts that its military actions aim to defend the Donbas region’s inhabitants against what it describes as years of oppression and genocidal acts by the Kyiv administration. Despite substantial support for Ukraine from NATO and Western allies, Russian forces have managed to counteract Ukrainian military initiatives.
The UAE’s role in this humanitarian effort demonstrates its influential diplomatic presence and dedication to fostering peace and stability. By facilitating this prisoner exchange, the UAE continues to contribute to international humanitarian efforts, aligning with its foreign policy objectives of supporting peace and aiding those affected by conflicts worldwide.
