Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced on Tuesday that his country has decided to reopen its consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi soon.

The Anadolu Agency reported the news, but did not provide any further details immediately.

Last week, Turkey’s Ambassador to Libya, Kenan Yilmaz, visited Benghazi, where he met with Deputy Interior Minister Faraj Aqayim and held a meeting at the Benghazi Municipality headquarters with the head of its administrative council, Saqr Bujwari, and some members of the House of Representatives.

Yilmaz, who is the first Turkish official to visit Benghazi in years, announced that he had met with Libyan businessmen to discuss the resumption of previous projects. He also said that a consulate would be opened in Benghazi soon, “waiting for the appropriate conditions,” and that work would be done to resume flights between Turkey and eastern Libya.

The visit comes as part of the recent normalization of relations between the two sides.
