Tunisia has successfully contained the sweeping wildfires that ravaged several regions of the country, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Tunisian firefighters, members of the Algerian army, and firefighting planes from Spain.
The fires had spread from Algeria into Tunisian regions, including the forests of Tabarka, Jendouba, Beja, Bizerte, and Siliana.
Algeria also managed to bring under control the bush fires that had been raging in its forests, resulting in significant loss of life, with at least 34 people, including 10 soldiers, reported dead.
The wildfires in Tunisia prompted the evacuation of hundreds of residents as a heatwave engulfed North Africa and southern Europe.
Some cities in Tunisia recorded extreme temperatures of 49 degrees Celsius (120 Fahrenheit) during the heatwave.
Fortunately, Tunisian Interior Minister Kamel Feki confirmed that no loss of life was recorded during the recent fires.
Additionally, the 600 residents who were evacuated have all safely returned to their homes as the situation has been brought under control.
The successful containment of the wildfires showcases the importance of regional cooperation and swift response in managing natural disasters.
