Former US President Donald Trump has proposed that foreign nationals who complete advanced education in the United States should be granted automatic permanent residency, amid a heightened focus on immigration during his presidential campaign.
In a podcast interview released by All-In on Thursday, it was mentioned that Trump suggested graduates should automatically receive a Green Card along with their diploma, allowing them to stay in the country.
The Green Card signifies permanent residency in the US.
Addressing inquiries about immigration restrictions ahead of the upcoming presidential election, the Republican candidate argued that such policies impede America’s competitiveness and its ability to attract the most talented individuals.
It was noted that Trump mentioned knowing individuals who have graduated from prestigious universities and desire to remain in the US They have plans and ideas but face obstacles in implementing them.
Instead, they return to India or China, where they engage in similar endeavors, accumulate wealth, and employ thousands of activities that could have been conducted in the US.
These statements represent a departure from Trump’s typically strict immigration stance, coming shortly after Democratic rival Joe Biden announced plans to expedite work visa processes for educated immigrants who secure job offers in the U.S.
Seizing the moment on Tuesday, it was reported that the Democrat criticized his predecessor, condemning Trump and comparing his remarks to those of the billionaire, who characterized immigrants as “blood-sucking animals” in the country.
Meanwhile, it was asserted by Trump’s campaign team, which promises widespread deportations if successful, that Biden’s measures will undoubtedly worsen immigrant-related crimes.
The presidential contenders are set to face off for the first time since their 2020 nominations in two presidential debates, both of which Trump and Biden have committed to participating in.
It was announced that the first debate will air on June 27 on CNN, followed by another on September 10 on ABC.
