Today, Sunday, Syrian Interior Minister Mohammad Khaled al-Rahmoun announced that his visit to Iraq included the signing, with the Iraqi side, of a memorandum of security cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
Al-Rahmoun was quoted by news agencies during a joint press conference with Iraq’s Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari in Baghdad, stating that the memorandum includes cooperation in combating terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, cybersecurity, as well as cooperation in rehabilitation and training.
He added that he discussed with his Iraqi counterpart cooperation in all fields, especially in the security domain. Al-Rahmon pointed out that both Syria and Iraq are facing the threat of terrorism and suffer from the proliferation of terrorist organizations.
The Syrian minister traveled to the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Saturday, where he met with his Iraqi counterpart Abdul Amir al-Shammari.
Al-Rahmoun also met with several Iraqi officials to discuss the development of relations between the two countries and the signing of a memorandum to enhance security cooperation.
Syria and Iraq have been grappling with security challenges stemming from terrorism and the presence of various extremist groups within their territories.
Both countries have faced significant instability in recent years due to conflicts and political unrest.
The signing of a memorandum of joint security cooperation signifies a mutual recognition of the importance of collaboration in addressing shared security threats, including terrorism, drug trafficking, and cyber threats.
