In an unusual letter to the United Nations Security Council, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen issued a warning about the possibility of war due to the situation in southern Lebanon.
Cohen stated in the letter that if UN Security Council Resolution 1701 is not fully implemented and if Hezbollah continues to be present on the borders, and if the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) does not utilize all its capabilities to prevent any unauthorized military presence south of the Litani River, a war could erupt, as reported by Israel’s Channel 12.
Cohen wrote, “For the sake of regional stability and preventing further escalation, the upcoming discussion of the United Nations Security Council must adopt a completely different approach to ending the serious violations committed by Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations on the borders.”
The letter underscores Israel’s growing concerns about Hezbollah’s activities in southern Lebanon, which it views as a threat to its national security.
Israel has long accused Hezbollah of stockpiling weapons and operating in the area near the Israeli-Lebanese border, a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
This letter comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, and it signals Israel’s determination to address what it sees as a direct threat from Hezbollah’s presence in southern Lebanon through diplomatic channels.
The international community will be closely watching developments in response to Israel’s call for action regarding this sensitive issue.
