German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed concern about the potential for regional escalation of the Gaza war during a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, according to a statement by his spokesman, Wolfgang Buechner.

Scholz emphasized the urgency of finalizing an agreement on releasing captives and achieving a ceasefire. He stated that ending the war in Gaza would be a crucial step toward regional de-escalation.

The Chancellor also highlighted the ongoing “enormous” human suffering in the Gaza Strip.
