The United States (US) and Saudi Arabia have agreed to initiate discussions for a collaboration agreement focused on space exploration and aeronautics.

As per a joint statement, both nations will engage in negotiations to create a framework for cooperation in these areas, emphasizing peaceful purposes.

The statement outlined that technical discussions would be held on potential joint activities in fields such as aeronautics, Earth and space science, space operations, and the non-aggressive exploration and utilization of outer space.

The talks aim to strengthen cooperation in commercial and regulatory aspects of space, promote responsible behavior in space, and enhance space security.

The joint effort is expected to open up opportunities for collaboration between the commercial space industries of both countries.

The US and Saudi Arabia share a long-standing bilateral relationship, spanning nearly eight decades, with mutual interests in maintaining the stability, security, and prosperity of the Gulf region. They collaborate closely on various regional and global matters, including security, counterterrorism, and diplomatic and financial cooperation.

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Saudi Space Commission, Eng. Abdullah Al-Swaha, led the Saudi delegation to Washington for this agreement.

Al-Swaha highlighted that this agreement aligns with the ambitions of both countries to enhance their strategic partnership, focusing on empowering people, environmental protection, and forging new cooperative avenues in space and earth sciences.

He further commented that this initiative would contribute to the sustainability of the sector, boost research and development, and accelerate the advancement of space-related technologies. Additionally, Al-Swaha emphasized the benefits of talent development and knowledge exchange through this partnership.
