The Saudi Arabian government announced on Tuesday that it will build a new $40 million logistics hub in the eastern city of Dammam. The project is part of the kingdom’s efforts to boost its logistics sector, which is in line with the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services.
The Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) and Midlog, the logistics arm of Mediterranean Shipping Company, laid the foundation stone for the new integrated logistics zone at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and chairman of MAWANI, Engineer Saleh Al-Jasser.
“The launch of the new logistics zone is in line with MAWANI’s core role in developing a sustainable and thriving maritime sector that contributes to enabling national economic and social aspirations,” said MAWANI Chairman Omar Hariri. “It also achieves MAWANI’s strategic objectives of increasing the number of logistics zones to 30, including zones for re-export, and increasing the private sector’s contribution to supporting economic development, in line with the objectives of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services to consolidate the Kingdom’s position as a global logistics hub and a crossroads for three continents.”
According to the information released, the new zone will be located in a strategic location near the industrial city of Jubail and will be well-positioned to serve the needs of the local market. It will cover an area of 100,000 square meters and have a capacity of 300,000 containers per year.
The new zone is expected to boost the competitiveness of King Abdulaziz Port and Midlog and will help to increase the kingdom’s role as a global logistics hub.
