In a recent development, the Russian military announced that it dispatched a fighter jet on Monday to intercept a Norwegian warplane that was approaching Russia’s borders over the Barents Sea in the Arctic Ocean, according to the French news agency.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated in a press release that the Russian Air Force sent a fighter jet to intercept a Norwegian Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.
As the Russian fighter jet approached, the Norwegian military plane altered its course.
This announcement comes just hours after the Netherlands revealed that the Danish Air Force intercepted two Russian bombers.
The Russian aircraft were flying toward an area under Dutch surveillance on behalf of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Norway, a NATO member, shares a land border with Russia, as well as a maritime border in the Barents Sea.
Incidents involving Russian and Western aircraft have risen in recent months amid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
