In an interview with the website aif.ru, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia believes Brazil, India, and African countries should receive permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council.
The Russian minister emphasized that this would ensure the representation of the global majority in this critical international body.
Lavrov added: “We believe that countries like India and Brazil, as well as representatives from Africa, should have been granted permanent membership in the Security Council long ago. This is necessary to ensure diversity and representation of the global majority.”
At the end of September, before participating in the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Lavrov noted that developing countries are underrepresented in the Security Council. He mentioned that Russia supports the legitimate efforts of India, Brazil, and an African nation to gain permanent membership.
Previously, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin stressed the importance of reaching a consensus on Security Council reform. He emphasized that Russia opposes expanding this central UN body in favor of NATO and European Union countries, considering such a move unacceptable.
Moreover, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, stated that any expansion of the Security Council should include countries from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
