Morocco’s women’s football team secured their first-ever victory in the FIFA Women’s World Cup by defeating South Korea 1-0 on Sunday.
Striker Ibtissam Jraidi achieved the team’s first-ever World Cup goal in the sixth minute, breaking the tie with a diving header.
“We are just so pleased our efforts have paid off. This victory is for Morocco and Arabs, it’s the fruit of our hard work,” said Jraidi after the game.
Despite having more possession, South Korea, a finalist in the 2022 Asian Cup, recorded fewer shots on target. This second consecutive loss has left them teetering on the edge of elimination from the tournament. After a 6-0 defeat by Germany in their first group game, Morocco now holds three points in the competition.
Later on Sunday, Germany, the favorite of the group, will compete against Colombia, with both teams currently holding three points.
The Women’s World Cup 2023, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20, will only advance the top two teams from each of the eight groups to the round of 16.
This tournament marks the first time the women’s football championship has expanded to include 32 teams.
