Morocco, alongside a cohort of other nations, has appended its signature to a US-led political declaration regarding the responsible military application of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
This initiative delineates a standard framework addressing the employment of AI capabilities in the military sphere, aiming to foster international consensus on responsible conduct.
It guides nations on the development and deployment of military AI, providing a robust foundation for the exchange of best practices and expertise amongst countries, as stated by a White House statement.
The source also accentuated that Washington will orchestrate regular dialogues amongst the declaration’s endorsing nations to bolster international support for these practices.
The concerned nations are scheduled to convene in the first quarter of the upcoming year to commence the subsequent phases, as part of the agreement’s implementation.
Morocco is the solitary North African nation to have joined the declaration, alongside countries like Spain, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, and the UK, amongst others.
Concurrently, all nations are urged to support and join this declaration to enhance responsible military AI usage.
The statement relayed US Vice President Kamala Harris’s belief that globally impactful technology necessitates global collaboration.
To ensure order and stability amidst the ongoing technological transformation, a common set of standards and understandings among nations is imperative.
Washington will continue to collaborate with allies and partners to apply existing international rules on AI and work towards establishing new standards.
A separate White House statement reported that during her visit to London for the Global AI Summit, Harris announced a slew of new US initiatives to promote safe and responsible AI usage.
This includes the establishment of the “United States Institute for AI Safety,” aimed at developing technical guidelines, information exchange, and research cooperation with international counterparts.
Furthermore, a draft guideline on the US government’s AI usage has been prepared by the Office of Management and Budget to protect federal employees and manage risks arising from sensitive AI applications.
