FC Barcelona legend Lionel Messi announced that Inter Miami will be his final club, revealing in an interview with ESPN that he is not ready to retire yet.
“Inter Miami will be my last club,” Messi stated. “I love playing football. I enjoy everything much more now because I know there’s less time left to play.”
He added, “I’m still having fun. At the club [Inter Miami], I’m fortunate to have teammates and friends by my side, as well as in the national team. I cherish the little moments, knowing that I’ll miss it when I stop playing.”
Despite acknowledging the approaching end of his career, Messi was clear: “But I’m not ready to retire.”
Messi had the opportunity to return to his boyhood club, FC Barcelona, last summer after nearing free agency with Paris Saint-Germain.
However, he chose not to wait for Barcelona to resolve their Financial Fair Play issues and instead made the bold decision to join Inter Miami in the United States.
“It was very difficult to leave Europe to come here,” Messi remarked about his move. “Being a world champion helped me see things differently. Now, I enjoy it much more because I am aware that I am getting closer to retirement.”
