The Electricity of Lebanon (EDL) has announced the initiation of the shutdown of two power stations, Deir Ammar in the north and Zahrani in the south, starting today.
This development is expected to result in a complete halt of EDL’s production capacity and a disconnection of the entire power grid from Lebanon. Consequently, this will lead to a lack of electrical supply for subscribers and essential state facilities.
The two power stations represent the sole sources of electricity on the national power grid, generating around 550 megawatts, under the exceptional circumstances prevailing in the country.
In a statement released today, the EDL confirmed that it was informed by the operator of the power stations, PRIMESOUTH, that due to unpaid dues in foreign currency, the decision was made to halt the operation of both Zahrani and Deir Ammar power stations.
This shutdown will take effect from 5:00 PM local time today.
The institution further explained that the company operating the power stations has already initiated the necessary procedures for the shutdown.
EDL emphasized that this situation is beyond its control and has the potential to cripple its production capacity, resulting in a complete disconnection of the power grid and a lack of electrical supply to subscribers.
This unfortunate outcome includes critical facilities within the state. All this transpires despite EDL’s intensive efforts over the past two weeks, working with various concerned parties to find solutions and avoid this outcome.
