Denmark has announced the extension of the strict border controls that have been in place for months.
This decision comes in the wake of the burning of copies of the Koran in both Denmark and neighboring Sweden. The Danish police stated that due to the current growing threats, they will temporarily step up their efforts at the border.
This is the second time that the enhanced border control measures have been extended since their implementation on August 3.
Denmark followed in the footsteps of Sweden, which tightened security measures in the wake of the unrest in several Islamic countries in response to the desecration of the Qur’an in these two kingdoms.
The Danish police explained that the intensification of border efforts is a security measure aimed at preventing the entry of individuals who pose a threat to the country’s security.
These control measures are implemented haphazardly at the borders of Sweden and Germany. According to the new decision, it will remain in effect until August 22.
Both Scandinavian countries are considering ways to limit incidents involving Quran burning while respecting freedom of expression.
