Elias Baysari, the Director of Public Security in Lebanon, revealed that a comprehensive plan is being prepared for the deportation of several Syrian prisoners as part of an extensive review of the Syrian refugee situation.

In an interview with “Al-Jumhuriya” newspaper, Baysari discussed the impending proposal that he plans to present at a conference in Brussels next month, focusing on the Syrian refugee crisis.

Baysari is currently coordinating with the Minister of Justice and the Public Prosecution to prepare a plan that would facilitate the deportation of some Syrian prisoners under the supervision of the Minister of Interior.

He also mentioned that the General Directorate of Public Security is preparing amendments related to the residency conditions for residents, emphasizing the enforcement of strict residency requirements.

The new modifications will impose stringent regulations on any Syrian violating Lebanese residency or legal conditions, including immediate deportation if these conditions are breached.

Regarding his upcoming visit to Syria, Baysari stated that it requires an “appropriate timing agreed upon by both the Syrian and Lebanese governments to prepare the groundwork and start negotiations on the possibility of deporting prisoners.”

Baysari also pointed out the necessity of adhering to the treaty between Lebanon and Syria, noting that “agreements between countries are always subject to amendment if the treaty parties agree to such changes.”

He stressed the importance of examining all files carefully and individually to ensure comprehensive and detailed discussions on each matter.

There is strict enforcement against employing, accommodating, or providing housing for Syrians residing illegally in Lebanon, in addition to prohibiting registered Syrians with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from engaging in any paid work outside the designated sectors for them.
