Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati Denies Reports of US Informing Lebanon About Gaza War Ceasefire
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has denied reports from a Lebanese media outlet claiming that “the United States officially informed the Lebanese government that the war on Gaza will cease.”
The Lebanese National News Agency quoted Mikati as saying, “What was reported by the Lebanese station (Al-Jadeed) in its news broadcast on Saturday evening regarding this matter is completely untrue.”
The ongoing Gaza conflict has significantly escalated tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Since the start of the conflict, there have been regular cross-border clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, fueled by the group’s support for the Palestinians in Gaza. These hostilities have led to significant displacement on both sides of the border and a growing fear of a full-scale war.
Hezbollah has been launching rockets and drones into northern Israel, while Israel has responded with airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon. The situation is further complicated by Hezbollah’s strong ties with Iran, which has led to concerns about a broader regional conflict. Both Israel and Hezbollah have made aggressive statements, with Israel threatening severe retaliation if diplomacy fails. The situation remains volatile, with international efforts to de-escalate tensions yet to yield significant results.
The Lebanese government and Hezbollah have indicated that their actions are in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza, but Israel views these actions as a direct threat to its northern borders, further complicating the already tense situation.
