An Israeli airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs on Thursday targeted Mohammed Srur, the head of Hezbollah’s drone unit, a source close to the group confirmed. It remains unclear whether Srur, also known as Abu Saleh, survived the attack.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that two people were killed and 15 others wounded, including a woman in critical condition, as a result of the strike. This was the fourth Israeli strike in a week targeting Hezbollah commanders in one of the group’s strongholds.
The Israeli military confirmed it was conducting “precise strikes” in the area but provided no further details.
The targeted commander, Srur, is a mathematics expert who reportedly played a key role in training Yemen’s Houthi rebels, another group backed by Iran.
An AFP photographer said the target of the airstrike was located near the building where Ibrahim Aqil, the head of Hezbollah’s Radwan Force, was killed along with other commanders in a previous Israeli strike last Friday. That attack left 55 people dead, including seven children.
The National News Agency in Lebanon reported that three missiles struck a residential apartment within a 10-storey building in the densely populated area.
