In a recent development, Israel has approached several European countries, urging them to send hospital ships to Egypt for treating the wounded from the Gaza Strip, instead of channeling fuel supplies into the region. This initiative was first reported by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth. Initially, Tel Aviv reached out to France, followed by Germany and other nations, in a bid to establish a medical aid framework that diverts from the conventional fuel support to the embattled Gaza Strip. The discussions regarding this initiative are ongoing and yet to be finalized.
This move aims not only to provide immediate medical relief but also to vacate the hospitals within Gaza that are reportedly being utilized by Hamas. The Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has mentioned that his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, has promised to send a ship to treat the injured and wounded individuals in Gaza. During a joint press conference, Sisi highlighted the consensus on channeling more aid into Gaza, with President Macron pledging to dispatch a hospital ship for the Palestinian casualties in need.
Furthermore, an American media outlet, Axios, quoted both an Israeli official and an Arab source confirming Israel’s commitment to repatriate the Palestinian wounded post-treatment in Egypt back to Gaza following the conflict. Israeli officials stressed that their assurance was pivotal in persuading Egypt, the United States, and other nations to commence the evacuation of Palestinian wounded to Egyptian hospitals for treatment amidst the ongoing hostilities in Gaza.
According to the report, under the new agreement, around 80 Palestinian wounded individuals from the Gaza Strip were evacuated to hospitals in Egypt on Wednesday. This marks the first instance of Palestinians leaving Gaza since October 7. This shift in aid strategy underscores a broader collaborative effort aimed at alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza while navigating the complex geopolitical dynamics of the region. The initiative also reflects a shared sense of responsibility among the involved nations towards addressing the critical medical needs arising from the conflict-ridden Gaza Strip, marking a significant step towards fostering regional stability and humanitarian relief.
