Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid has highlighted the importance of Iraq’s strategic partnership with NATO, focusing on bilateral cooperation through advisory support and contributions to the development of the military and combat capabilities of Iraqi security forces.
This assertion was made during his meeting with the outgoing commander of the NATO mission in Iraq, Lieutenant General José Antonio Aguero, and his successor, Lieutenant General Kees Schreurs.
The meeting, also attended by NATO’s Ambassador in Iraq, Ronald Sonnemans, was reported by the Iraqi News Agency “WAA”.
President Rashid praised the ongoing cooperation and stressed the significant role NATO plays in supporting Iraq in enhancing its security and defence sectors.
The transition of command within the NATO mission signifies a continued commitment to the security partnership between Iraq and NATO, aiming to bolster stability in the region.
This meeting underscores Iraq’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its security apparatus and to foster international relationships that support peace and development within the country.
In February, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani held talks with NATO’s Joint Force Command’s Admiral Stuart Munsch.
The discussions, which took place on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference 2024, covered a broad range of security issues in the region, highlighting the ongoing cooperation between NATO’s mission and Iraqi security forces.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani praised the level of collaboration between the Iraqi Armed Forces and the alliance, emphasizing the importance of such coordination in bolstering regional and international security and stability.
