The Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday the recovery of a rare Assyrian artifact dating back to the 7th century BC. This artifact was handed over by the International Transport of Cultural Property under the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, marking a significant achievement in the protection of Iraq’s cultural heritage.
The Assyrian artifact, an impressive gypsum wall carving featuring a horse and a chariot carrying three people surrounded by palm trees, was received during a ceremony hosted by the Swiss agency. The artifact was delivered to the Acting Ambassador of Iraq in Bern, Mohammed Jawad Mehdi, highlighting the successful collaborative efforts in cultural property repatriation.
The piece measures 64 centimeters in length, 41 centimeters in height, and is nine centimeters thick, resting on a metallic base. This remarkable artifact offers a glimpse into Iraq’s rich history and Assyrian civilization’s grandeur.
Mehdi expressed his gratitude for the efforts of the International Transport of Cultural Property and other Swiss entities involved in the restoration of Iraqi heritage. He emphasized that the recovery of this artifact represents a significant achievement of deep importance to Iraq’s history and cultural legacy.
