A rocket attack targeted the US military base at the Conoco gas plant in the Deir ez-Zor countryside of Syria.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the US air defenses successfully intercepted the rocket.
The attack reportedly originated from areas controlled by Iran-backed militias, prompting heightened alert among US forces in the region.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of attacks on US military installations in Syria. Since November 19th of last year, US bases in the country have been targeted 143 times by Iran-backed militia groups, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The Conoco gas plant, where the US base is located, has been a strategic asset in the region due to its proximity to oil and gas fields in northeastern Syria.
The US military presence in this area is part of a broader mission to support local Kurdish forces and to prevent the resurgence of ISIS. However, this presence has also made US installations a target for Iran-backed militias, who view the US as a foreign occupier and oppose its influence in the region.
Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Syria has become a battleground for various international and regional powers. Iran has provided significant support to the Assad regime through both military and proxy forces, including militias that have a presence in the Deir ez-Zor area.
These militias, often equipped with rockets and other military hardware, have been involved in numerous attacks on US forces stationed in Syria.
The situation in northeastern Syria remains highly volatile, with the presence of multiple armed groups, including remnants of ISIS, Kurdish forces, and Iranian-backed militias, making the region a hotspot for continued conflict.
