The US Department of Justice announced criminal charges on Tuesday against Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and other militants for their involvement in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack in Israel.
The charges, filed in a New York City federal court, include conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organisation, resulting in death.
The complaint also implicates Iran and Hezbollah, accusing them of supplying Hamas with financial aid, rockets, and military supplies for use in attacks.
“These charges are part of our broader effort to target every aspect of Hamas’ operations,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said. He noted that further actions would follow.
Sinwar, appointed head of Hamas following Ismail Haniyeh’s killing in Iran, remains on Israel’s most-wanted list. He is believed to be hiding in tunnels under Gaza. Other Hamas leaders charged include Haniyeh, Marwan Issa, Khaled Mashaal, Mohammed al-Masri, and Ali Baraka.
The charges come as the US investigates the killings of American citizens, including Hersh Goldberg-Polin, in the recent conflict.
