German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has advocated for a prolonged ceasefire in the Gaza conflict, expressing a preference for its initiation during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

In a video message broadcast on Sunday, the Social Democratic Party politician emphasized the importance of the ceasefire coinciding with Ramadan.

He outlined that such a ceasefire should ultimately ensure the release of Israeli hostages and facilitate the delivery of additional humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Scholz also expressed his conviction that the vast majority of both Israelis and Palestinians are in favor of peace.

Additionally, he shared his concerns regarding the growing apprehension among Muslims in Germany about societal cohesion. Following reports of racist deportation plans crafted by right-wing extremists, Scholz noted an increase in anxious inquiries about the future.

He asserted that Germany’s response should be unequivocally clear, emphasizing the country’s refusal to become divided. Scholz highlighted that both citizens with and without immigrant backgrounds are equally part of Germany.

Furthermore, Scholz acknowledged that many individuals are particularly concerned for their relatives in the Middle East during these times.

He assured that they are not alone in their sentiments, as there is significant empathy in Germany for the plight of the deceased, abducted Israelis, for the innocent victims, the injured, and those suffering in Gaza.
