A terrorism investigation has been launched after a suspected arson attack targeted the Beth Yaacov synagogue in La Grand Motte, southern France, leaving a police officer injured. The officer sustained injuries after a gas cylinder in a burning vehicle near the synagogue exploded. He was hospitalized, but initial reports suggest his injuries are not serious.

The incident occurred early in the morning, with fires ignited at two entrances to the synagogue, where five people, including the rabbi, were inside at the time. Fortunately, they were unharmed. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin condemned the “manifestly criminal” attack and assured the Jewish community of full support, while authorities mobilized resources to locate the perpetrator.

French authorities have heightened security measures at Jewish places of worship across the country. The attack, which involved arson and the explosion of a gas cylinder, left a police officer injured and prompted a terrorism investigation.

The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) has taken charge of the investigation, classifying the incident as attempted murder, destruction using dangerous means, and criminal association with terrorist motivations. Acting Prime Minister Gabriel Attal confirmed that security at Jewish places of worship would be immediately reinforced as authorities review security footage to identify the suspect.
