The European Union has declared that Sudan is facing the world’s largest displacement crisis, driven by the conflict that has plagued the country for over a year.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned that “thousands of children in Sudan are at risk of death in the coming months.”
The UN revealed that 10.7 million people have been displaced within Sudan, while 2.3 million have fled across the borders. On August 22, the UN announced the delivery of humanitarian aid to Darfur through the Adré crossing at the Chad border, following a commitment by the Sudanese army to cease hostilities and allow relief organizations to deliver essential supplies.
More than 6 million people in Darfur face food insecurity, while over 25 million—about half the country’s population—are affected nationwide.
Since April 15 last year, the armed conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has continued, resulting in thousands of civilian deaths and millions displaced, both internally and across borders.
