Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin announced that for the first time, European Union foreign ministers held significant discussions on imposing sanctions on Israel if it fails to comply with international humanitarian law.

Speaking after the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Martin highlighted a strong consensus on the necessity to support international humanitarian legal institutions.

“For the first time in an EU meeting, I witnessed a genuine and important discussion regarding sanctions,” he said, according to Sputnik.

Martin noted that there is considerable concern among member states about compliance with International Court of Justice rulings.

Earlier today, an EU spokesperson stated, “We have a recommendation from foreign ministers to explore concrete measures against Israel.”

On Monday, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

He indicated his intention to seek support from EU partners for the International Court of Justice and to urge Israel to respect its decisions.
