Josep Borrell, the European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, condemned the attack by Israeli settlers on the West Bank village of Jit on Friday.
He indicated plans to propose sanctions against several Israeli ministers involved in escalating tensions.
Speaking on the platform “X,” Borrell stated, “We condemn settlers attacks in Jit, aimed at terrorising Palestinian civilians.”
“Day after day, in an almost total impunity, Israeli settlers fuel violence in the occupied West Bank, contributing to endanger any chance of peace.”
He added: “The Israeli government must stop these unacceptable actions immediately.I confirm my intention to table a proposal for EU sanctions against violent settlers’ enablers, including some Israeli government members.”
Earlier, over 100 Israeli settlers attacked Jit, resulting in at least one death and several injuries. They fired at residents and set fire to homes and vehicles.
Borrell previously called for blacklisting hardline ministers in the Israeli government.
On Monday, he posted on “X,” “As the world pushes for a ceasefire in Gaza, Israeli National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, is cutting off fuel and aid to civilians.”
In their first joint visit to the Middle East in a decade, French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné and British Foreign Minister David Lammy stressed the need to avoid a regional war in the area.
The two officials, visiting Israel and later the Palestinian territories, emphasized the importance of peace and stability during a press conference in Jerusalem on Friday.
Speaking alongside his British counterpart, Séjourné condemned the recent attacks by Israeli settlers on the Palestinian village of Qit in the West Bank.
Lammy echoed this sentiment, calling the violence by settlers “unacceptable” and noting its negative impact on ceasefire negotiations.
