Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelaty held a meeting with US Special Envoy to Libya, Ambassador Richard Norland, during his visit to Washington.
The discussions focused on finding a sustainable solution to the ongoing Libyan crisis.
According to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelaty emphasized that Egypt remains committed to intense communications with all parties involved in the Libyan conflict.
This effort reflects Egypt’s responsibility to assist Libya due to the historical and geographical ties between the two countries, as well as the bonds of brotherhood.
The minister reiterated Egypt’s support for a Libyan-led solution to the crisis, emphasizing the importance of respecting Libya’s institutions.
He highlighted the significance of conducting both presidential and parliamentary elections concurrently, as part of the efforts to resolve the conflict through a Libyan-owned and Libyan-led process.
Abdelaty also stressed the need to uphold the Skhirat Agreement as a reference point for the political process.
He called for the withdrawal of all foreign forces, fighters, and mercenaries from Libya within a specified timeframe.
This, he argued, is crucial for preserving Libya’s unity, stability, and sovereignty, ending the division within the country, and protecting its resources from external interference.
The meeting reaffirmed Egypt’s role as a key regional actor in efforts to bring peace and stability to Libya, aligning with international calls to end the foreign presence in the country and support the Libyan people in determining their future through democratic processes.
