Jordan’s King Abdullah II issued a stark warning about the dangerous escalation of tensions in the Middle East during his meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York on Friday.
The monarch highlighted the urgency of addressing the deteriorating situation and emphasized the need for immediate international intervention.
King Abdullah stressed the importance of securing an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza as a crucial first step toward de-escalation.
He also condemned the ongoing Israeli actions in the West Bank, calling for an end to the violence, including attacks by extremist settlers on Palestinians and violations of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
The king reiterated his appeal for enhanced international efforts to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
He emphasized the protection of relief workers, ensuring they can safely carry out their critical roles on the ground.
King Abdullah expressed his appreciation for Guterres’ efforts to halt the war in Gaza and his ongoing pursuit of a political solution that would lead to a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.
The Jordanian monarch also called on the global community to continue supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), enabling it to fulfill its humanitarian mission as mandated by the UN.
The meeting was attended by key Jordanian officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi, Royal Court Chief Eng. Alaa Batayneh, and Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mahmoud Hmoud.
