Denmark Urges Israel to Halt West Bank Settlements

Denmark has reiterated that Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories are illegal and has urged Israel to reverse its plans to establish 3,426 new settlement units in the West Bank.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, in a post on the X platform, highlighted that the settlements contravene international law, echoing the European Union’s call for Israel to retract its recent approval of new units in the West Bank settlements.

The condemnation aligns with the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell’s criticism of the new Israeli settlement plan, urging Israel to reconsider its decision.

The international community views the expansion of settlements as a significant barrier to peace in the region, undermining the prospects for a two-state solution.

Last month, Israeli reports indicated that President Joe Biden’s administration is considering reinstating the international legal violation status for settlements in the West Bank.

This move would effectively reverse the actions taken by former President Donald Trump’s administration, which in 2019 annulled the “Hansell Memorandum.”

This document had been followed by the U.S. government for 40 years, deeming the settlements as contravening international law.

According to Kan, the Israeli public broadcaster, the reconsideration by the Biden administration to criminalize West Bank settlements stems from new Israeli intentions to resettle in the Gaza Strip, as reported by i24NEWS.
