China has expressed strong concerns over the deployment of US missiles to the Philippines, stating that it poses a risk to regional peace and stability. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian criticized the move, asserting that it triggers political confrontation and heightens regional tensions.
Lin urged Manila to reassess Washington’s intentions and not compromise its security interests. He also called on the US to promptly remove its medium-range missiles from the Philippines.
The US deployed a medium-range missile launcher to the Philippines during military exercises in the spring. The two nations, bound by a mutual defense treaty since 1951, are currently negotiating updates to the treaty to address current security needs.
Tensions in the South China Sea have escalated, with incidents involving Chinese Coast Guard boats and Philippine vessels, including reported ship collisions. China has long been engaged in territorial disputes over the South China Sea with several countries, including the Philippines, over islands with significant hydrocarbon reserves.
