A primary school in East London has concluded its term prematurely due to intensifying threats towards its staff following accusations that a teacher punished an eight-year-old student for not taking off a Palestinian flag badge from his jacket.
Barclay Primary School in Leyton communicated to parents that an investigation found no evidence of bullying or inappropriate behavior, countering claims circulated on TikTok.
Demonstrators assembled outside the Ofsted-rated outstanding school, chanting slogans against the school and advocating for educational rights.
The issue escalated after a TikTok user named Zaki, who boasts over 80,000 followers, posted a video claiming that a Palestinian student was mistreated and psychologically affected by his teachers.
The video, which garnered over a thousand comments, mentioned that parents were warned about possible referrals to the government’s Prevent anti-terrorism scheme after students expressed support for Palestine during a charity event.
Zaki also noted that about 170 parents submitted a complaint letter to the school, highlighting concerns regarding free speech, inconsistent treatment, and Islamophobia. The student’s father alleged that his son faced penalties for keeping a Palestinian flag emblem on his coat.
According to Novara Media, the boy’s parents wrote to the school’s headteacher and governors, stating that their child felt distressed and humiliated by the school’s actions.
