Austria has heightened its security alert due to ongoing high terrorism risks, especially with the upcoming Western Easter celebrations.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner stated that police would intensively monitor Easter events and markets. More uniformed and plainclothes officers, along with special units like emergency squads and drones, will be deployed despite no specific threat evidence.
The State Security and Intelligence Directorate has rated the terrorism and extremism threat as “high,” prompting exceptional preventive measures during public gatherings at Easter markets and events, to be replicated during the Jewish Passover from April 22 to 30.
In Europe, the threat of terrorism remains significant. European Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson warned of a substantial risk of terrorist attacks during the holiday season, influenced by the Israel-Hamas conflict and polarizing societal impacts.
Western European countries like France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Sweden have raised their alert levels due to threats from Islamist terror and far-right extremism. Recent incidents in Germany and the Netherlands involving individuals linked to Hamas and suspected of plotting attacks have heightened concerns. The Council of Europe has adopted a new counter-terrorism strategy for 2023-2027 to address these evolving threats, focusing on violent extremism, the misuse of new technologies, and the impact of international conflicts on Europe’s security landscape .
