Argentina became the first team to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the Copa América, thanks to a late goal by Lautaro Martínez. The goal led Argentina to a 1-0 victory over Chile in Group A on Tuesday.

The match began cautiously, but Argentina soon took control, squandering several scoring opportunities. Julián Álvarez and Nicolás González tested Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, while Lionel Messi struck the post with a long-range effort.

In the second half, Alexis Mac Allister missed a golden chance for Argentina before Chile began to assert some control. Rodrigo Echeverría forced a save from Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

Just when it seemed Argentina might regret their missed chances, substitute Lautaro Martínez seized on a rebound from a corner kick, slotting the ball home with his right foot in the 88th minute to secure the win for the defending champions.

The Copa América is the oldest international football tournament, first held in 1916. Organized by CONMEBOL, it features South America’s top national teams.

Initially involving Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay, the tournament has since expanded to include all 10 CONMEBOL nations, often inviting teams from other continents. Held every four years, Copa América determines the continental champion and showcases intense rivalries and footballing prowess.

The tournament has seen legendary players and unforgettable matches, contributing to the rich footballing heritage of South America. Argentina and Uruguay are among the most successful teams, each winning multiple titles.
