Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, the Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector at the Arab League, announced that the Economic and Social Council held its 114th session at the senior official level.
During the session, representatives from member states were briefed on reports and recommendations from the council’s economic and social committees, which convened from September 1-3.
The meeting discussed proposed resolutions set to be elevated to the ministerial level tomorrow.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Abu Ghazaleh emphasized the significance of the agenda items, particularly highlighting the ongoing Israeli actions in Gaza and their extension to Lebanon.
She warned of the exacerbating social, humanitarian, and health situations due to these actions, which are nearly halting economic development. She stressed the importance of separating politics from the provision of social and humanitarian aid.
Dr. Abu Ghazaleh also pointed out the critical economic and social development issues discussed, especially those relating to the upcoming Arab Summit in Iraq.
Jassem Mohammed Al-Badiwi, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), expressed full solidarity and support for the Arab Republic of Egypt against provocative statements made by the Israeli Prime Minister, aimed at tarnishing Egypt’s image and undermining its significant and leading role in the region, particularly in its clear mediation efforts to resolve the Gaza crisis.
The Secretary-General highlighted Egypt’s pivotal role in enhancing regional and international stability through its ongoing mediation efforts to calm tensions and cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people since the crisis began.
Al-Badiwi firmly rejected such irresponsible statements that do not serve peace in the region but instead contribute to escalating tensions and worsening situations. He emphasized the necessity for Israel to adhere to international principles and signed agreements, as well as to cease its aggressive actions in Gaza and all Palestinian territories.
